The Impact of Federally Mandated Lifejacket Wear

Approximately 100 Canadians die each year while boating. According to a 2021 report by the Drowning Prevention Research Centre, lifejackets/PFDs (personal floatation devices) were not worn in an overwhelming majority of these preventable deaths.

Transport Canada has opened public consultation for feedback on a proposed legislation that would save lives by requiring recreational boaters to wear a lifejacket/PFD. This legislation could have a tremendous impact on the number of fatal drownings that result from boating accidents, which is why it is crucial to spread the word.
