SUMMARY: Reporting to the Aquatics Supervisor, the primary role of the Lifeguard 1 encompasses working with the public through supervision of the Aquatic Centre and ensuring that the aquatic areas are kept in a sanitary manner. Lifeguard I is responsible for the direct supervision and safety of patrons in the aquatic facility.

NOTE: Ideal candidates are those that have lifeguard and instructor certifications.
Under the direction of the Head Lifeguard, the incumbent provides constant safety supervision, instructs a wide variety of aquatic programs, assists with special events, and completes necessary administrative work associated with programs, accidents, incidents, mechanical issues, and cleaning. The incumbent is also responsible for balancing water chemistry, being able to perform emergency circulation system shutdowns and start-ups, back-up for chlorine primary responders, and is responsible for specific areas of facility cleanliness. Furthermore, the incumbent is required to act as the shift leader in the absence of the Pool Supervisors.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Aquatics Manager, the Lifeguard is part of the recreation department. This position is responsible for providing a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment where all members can enjoy the aquatic center.
Duties and Responsibilities
Surveillance: Maintaining constant surveillance of assigned areas to ensure the safety of patrons.
This involves scanning the water and surrounding areas for any signs of distress or potential
hazards.
• Prevention: Taking proactive measures to prevent accidents and injuries. This includes enforcing safety rules, educating patrons about water safety, and ensuring that all safety equipment is in good working order.
• Rescue: Responding quickly and effectively to emergencies in the water or on land. Lifeguards
must be trained in rescue techniques such as reaching, throwing, and towing, and be prepared to
perform CPR and first aid as needed.
• Emergency Response: Coordinating with other lifeguards, emergency services, and medical
personnel to provide timely and appropriate assistance during emergencies.
• Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service by assisting patrons, answering
questions, and addressing concerns in a friendly and professional manner.
• Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and inspecting the pool,
equipment, and facilities to ensure they are safe and in good condition.
• Record Keeping: Keeping accurate records of incidents, rescues, and other important information to help improve safety protocols and response procedures.
• Communication: Effectively communicating with patrons, colleagues, and supervisors to ensure a safe and efficient operation.
• Planning and Preparation: Designing lesson plans appropriate for the age and skill level of
students, including objectives and goals for each session.
• Teaching Swimming Skills: Instructing students in basic and advanced swimming techniques,
using effective and engaging methods.
• Ensuring Safety: Constantly monitoring all students during lessons to ensure their safety in and
around the water.
• Evaluating Progress: Assessing the progress of students, providing them with constructive
feedback, and adjusting lesson plans to meet individual learning needs and abilities.
• Promoting Water Safety: Educating students on important aspects of water safety, drowning
prevention, and safe behavior in and around water environments.
• Communication: Effectively communicating with students, parents, and guardians.
• Administration: Recording attendance, tracking progress, and administer and create report cardsupon session completion.
• Attend in-service meetings.
Education and Experience:
• Swim For Life Instructor / Life Saving Instructor is considered an asset
• First Aid required
• National Lifeguard (NL) required
• SwimAbilities Instructor is considered an asset
• Intervention Record Check (IRC) required
• Solid written and verbal communication skills
