Andrew Hyslop and Barbara Zinter Award for Lifeguarding

DEADLINE: March 31, 2025

Andrew Hyslop and Barbara Zinter met while working at summer jobs as lifeguards at Miette Hot Springs in Jasper National Park in 1972. It was the beginning of a wonderful life together.

They established the Andrew Hyslop and Barbara Zinter Award for Lifeguarding in recognition of the benefits of lifeguarding and lifesaving programs offered by the Royal Lifesaving Society of Canada. Through these programs, students may seek employment as a lifeguard, supporting them financially as they pursue post-secondary education.

In addition to learning about water safety, through lifeguarding individuals learn responsibility that directly impacts development of their self-confidence. Lifeguarding can be a fun job, often outdoors, where students have an opportunity to meet others with similar interests.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must demonstrate proof of being a student in an Alberta/Northwest Territories Junior or Senior high school.
  • Must demonstrate a plan to pursue post-secondary education.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to community involvement and lifesaving/lifeguarding, as well as a plan to register for Lifesaving Society Bronze, National Lifeguard, or Instructor courses.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

Due to the recent provincial fires, as well as the Calgary water main break and pool closures, preference this year will be given to residents of Calgary and Jasper, as well as surrounding areas.
