Practical Training: Understanding Disability in Aquatic Environments

On March 23, Cochrane's SLS Centre will hold a special in-service training session on disability in aquatic environments!

The session is facilitated by Tanya Salwach - certified Aquatic Therapist and WATSU Practitioner specializing in complex care, and Triple P Practitioner specializing in disability.

While it's a perfect complimentary session to our SwimAbilities courses, this in-service training is designed for Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, and all aquatic staff, to foster a better understanding of diverse needs and disabilities in an aquatic environment.

This training spans a total of six hours, with 3 hours in the classroom and 3 hours in the water. Topics include:

  • Disability: What is disability? What are the common behavioural and social challenges?
  • Equipment: Using and understanding Adaptive Aquatic equipment.
  • Teaching: Communication and teaching strategies to use with the diverse needs community.

Participants will gain practical knowledge about disabilities, common social and behavioural challenges, and various teaching strategies. They will also get to experience hands-on scenarios in the water using specialized equipment and gear.
