Lifejackets: The Next Seatbelts?
According to this 2021 report on Recreational Boating-Related Fatalities in Canada, each year, approximately 100 Canadians die in boating-related incidents.
This is a harrowing statistic, made all the more apparent by the report's finding that, in 80% of these fatalities, a lifejacket or PFD (Personal Floatation Device) was not worn.
Although Transport Canada's Small Vessel Regulations require that recreational vessels keep lifejackets or PFDs on board, just like seatbelts, lifejackets only work if they are properly worn.
The Lifesaving Society supports the mandatory wear of lifejackets/PFDs for all ages, in all recreational vessel types 6 metres or less in length. This includes powerboats, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and sailboats.
Transport Canada has recently proposed a new legislation that would require recreational boaters to wear a lifejacket or PFD while on the water, and are currently seeking public feedback. If implemented, this legislation could have a tremendous impact on the number of fatal drownings resulting from boating accidents.
